Garage Organization: From Chaos to Calm

Garage Organization Tips

Let’s be honest...garages often become the catch-all for everything we don’t quite know what to do with.

If you’ve been putting off organizing yours, you’re not alone.

The good news? With a clear plan, you can transform your garage into a functional, stress-free space that works for your everyday life.

Step 1: Declutter First

Start by decluttering your garage.

If you have the space, take everything out and sort items by category. This gives you a full picture of what you own.

If space is limited (or you’re short on time) use bins to group items instead. This is also a great method if you’re tackling the garage in stages.

Step 2: Sort and Purge

Once everything is separated, it’s time to edit.

Ask yourself:

  • When was the last time I used this?

  • How much would it cost to replace if I needed it again?

  • Could I borrow or rent it instead?

  • Is the space this item is taking up worth it?

Do you really need five tape measures or four of the same screwdriver?

Think like a secondhand store...if something takes up valuable space but won’t be used often, it may not be worth keeping.

Step 3: Plan Your Space

Now the fun begins.

Start by measuring your garage. If you plan to park your car(s) inside, tape off that space first so you don’t accidentally crowd it.

Next, create zones based on your lifestyle:

  • Car Maintenance

  • Tools

  • Lawn & Garden

  • Holiday Storage

  • Sports Equipment

Your zones should reflect what you actually own and use.

Step 4: Choose the Right Storage Solutions

For holiday decorations, I recommend using 27-gallon bins.

For larger items like Christmas trees, a 50-gallon bin usually fits everything in one place.

Holiday bins are one of the few times I recommend stacking. Since you typically access them all at once, stacking saves valuable space.

For everyday-use items, store bins on shelves instead of stacking—this makes them much easier to access.

And don’t skip labels! Clearly labeling bins makes both decorating and packing up so much easier.

Step 5: Organize Tools & Equipment

There are many ways to organize tools.

Depending on how many you have, a toolbox may be enough, or you may benefit from a full tool chest system.

Before purchasing anything, take inventory of your tools and measure your space so you choose the right solution.

Step 6: Maximize Vertical & Ceiling Space

Taking advantage of vertical space is essential in any garage.

Consider:

  • Pegboards for frequently used tools like hammers and drills

  • Wall hooks for lawn equipment such as leaf blowers and trimmers

  • Bike hooks or racks to get bicycles off the floor

  • Sports storage systems for easy access

Ceiling-mounted storage racks are a great solution for items you don’t use often. They allow you to safely store seasonal or bulky items overhead while keeping your floor space clear and functional.

If you’re hanging bikes for children, make sure they can safely take them down on their own.

Step 7: Maintain Your System

Once everything has a home, the goal is to keep it that way.

  • Do a quick 10-minute reset each week

  • Return items to their designated zones

  • Revisit and declutter every 6 months

Final Thoughts

An organized garage isn’t just about appearance—it creates calm, saves time, and makes daily life easier.

Imagine knowing exactly where everything is, every time you need it.

That’s the power of a well-designed system.
