Let’s talk about six habits of highly organized people.

6 habits of highly organized people

Whether you feel like you are pretty organized, or hectic most of the time, try these simple tips to create a habit that will help your mental health and personal space.

  1. Keep it simple.

Organization doesn't need to be overly complicated. The best organization systems only add a few tweaks to your daily routine. Don't burn down your whole lifestyle thinking you need to start from scratch. Just focus on small pivots you can make for a more organized and tidy lifestyle.

  1. Develop morning and evening routines.

Get up early, make time to eat a good breakfast, exercise, meditate, or whatever it is you do to center yourself and your mind. This will help get you in the right mindset to integrate your to do list into the day. Turn important tasks into routines and work your life around them, not the other way around. If you fall short, no worries! Just start again the next day. The great thing is, you get unlimited chances to try again.

  2. Have a place for everything and everything in it’s place.

This works for the physical items as well as the digital. Once you’ve established a place something, always put it back in that same place. Sometimes we get distracted and it’s easy to set things down and tell yourself you’ll get to it later. But the problem is, later never comes OR it comes at the most stressful time. Take the time in the moment to put it away. Your future self will thank you!

  3. Keep current and detailed to do lists.

Start with your end goals and work backwards with smaller steps to achieve that goal. Keep a daily list as well as a long-term list. If paper lists work better for you, do that. If you have a digital list, keep both lists digital.

  4. Don’t be a perfectionist.

You don’t have to get everything done exactly right or perfect all the time. Prioritize your tasks and try to find shortcuts to get things done quickly. Delegate if possible and be sure to bring your family into the daily tasks. Remember the end goal is progress, not perfection.

  5. Purge routinely and toss things often.

Schedule a purging appointment with yourself to go through emails, digital files, closets, and pantries. If you take a few minutes each night in a different zone, you can stay on top of the chaos. Being organized isn’t a one-time thing, it’s successful when it’s part of your everyday routine.
