Organize Now, Enjoy the Holidays Later: Your Pre-Holiday Reset

The holidays have a way of sneaking up on us.
One minute you're pulling out a fall decoration, and the next you're trying to figure out where overnight guests will sleep, where the gifts are going to hide, and how you're possibly going to fit Thanksgiving leftovers into a refrigerator that's already full.
That's why October is one of our favorite times to organize.
Not because your home needs to be perfect before the holidays. It doesn't.
But a little preparation now can make the next few months feel significantly easier.
Give Your Future Self a Head Start
Organization isn't just about making a space look better. A good organizational system makes everyday life easier.
And during the holidays, "everyday life" suddenly includes gifts, decorations, extra groceries, school events, visitors, parties, travel and approximately 47 things you need to remember to bring somewhere.
Instead of waiting until you're in the middle of it all, use October to create some breathing room.
Here are a few places we recommend starting.
1. Clear Out the Guest Spaces
If you'll be hosting overnight guests this holiday season, don't wait until the day before they arrive to tackle the guest room.
And yes, we know.
The guest room has a tendency to become the place where everything without a home goes to live.
Start by removing anything that doesn't actually belong there. Check closets and drawers, clear surfaces and make sure your guests will have somewhere to put their belongings.
No guest room? No problem.
Think about where guests will sleep and what you'll need: air mattresses, extra bedding, pillows, towels and blankets. Gather those items now and give them a designated home.
Future-you will be very grateful.
2. Make Room in the Pantry
Holiday groceries are coming.
Before they arrive, take a quick inventory of your pantry. Toss expired food, combine duplicates and donate unopened items your family isn't going to use.
Then organize what's left into simple categories that make sense for the way your family actually cooks and eats.
This isn't about having matching containers worthy of a Pinterest board.
It's about being able to find the cinnamon when you're halfway through a recipe.
3. Reset the Refrigerator and Freezer
The same rule applies here.
Clear out expired condiments, mystery leftovers and anything that's been hiding in the back of the freezer for longer than you'd like to admit.
Creating extra room now means you'll have space for holiday ingredients, prepared dishes and all those leftovers later.
4. Declutter Toys Before New Ones Arrive
If you have children, October and early November are great times for a toy edit.
Go through toys together and look for things that are broken, outgrown or simply no longer played with.
Depending on their age, children can help decide what they're ready to pass along.
You're not just making room for future gifts. You're teaching them an important part of organization: when new things come into our homes, sometimes other things need to leave.
5. Take Inventory of Your Holiday Décor
Before buying another box of ornaments because you can't remember what you own, take a look at your holiday storage.
Pull out damaged decorations, tangled lights that no longer work and décor you haven't used in years.
Then organize what remains by holiday, room or category—whatever makes decorating easiest for you.
And label it.
Always label it.
6. Create a Gift Zone
Gifts tend to migrate.
A bag in the closet. A package under the bed. Three Amazon boxes in the garage that you have to hide every time your kids walk by.
Designate one place for holiday gifts and wrapping supplies.
If possible, keep wrapping paper, tape, scissors, tags, ribbon and gift bags together so you aren't hunting through five different closets every time you need to wrap something.
7. Don't Organize for an Imaginary Family
This might be the most important step.
Your systems need to work for the people who actually live in your home.
If your kids won't put toys into perfectly categorized tiny bins, don't create that system.
If you need to see something to remember that you have it, don't hide everything inside opaque containers.
If everyone drops their shoes by the same door, that's probably where the shoe storage belongs.
Good organization works with your habits...not against them.
A Calmer Holiday Season Starts Before the Holidays
You don't need to overhaul your entire home before November.
Choose the spaces that will make the biggest difference during the next few months and start there.
A cleared guest closet.
An organized pantry.
A designated wrapping station.
A little extra room for what's coming.
Those small changes can remove dozens of tiny frustrations from an already busy season.
And if looking around your home leaves you wondering where to even begin, you don't have to tackle it alone.
